UNESCO's Blessing is a Curse

Antigua, Guatemala is a beautiful colonial city, magnificently restored and maintained. Its streets and homes, its public squares and churches exude history. Monumental ruins are scattered about, giving the place a mythological air. To the south and west, three majestic volcanoes reveal the city's past. At the same time, they protect its secrets and tragedies. In Antigua, everything is in harmony. Everything? Well, almost everything.

Gallardon-grad

I don’t know if everyone is clear on Mr. Gallardón´s idea. Changing the zoning laws means that some people who have a home today, might not have one tomorrow thanks to our right honorable Mayor and his personal, collectivist vision of how to raise the quality of urban life. We are talking about confiscation, expropriation, robbery or seizure.

The Minister´s Mini-Houses

She has imagined building micro-apartments, 25 square meters (269 square feet) in total, so she can stuff young people into them. The few lucky youngsters receiving one of these micro-habitation solutions, can thank her for the rest of their lives. The driving force behind the Minister’s idea is that we take up too much room and, therefore, we need to ration space by sharing hallways, bathrooms and storage rooms.
